A boy and his dog walk into an unknown future. The world is on fire, both literally and figuratively. The legendary phoenix dies by bursting into flame. It is then reborn from the ashes to start a new, long life.

Survivor

30" x 24"
This is a painting of an African American man coming out of the darkness into the light, overcoming struggle. The image is based on a photo of a man with AIDS and I was struck by his combination of strength and vulnerability. He looks straight at the viewer, defying us to ignore him. This painting was selected by juror Randall R. Griffey, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for the 101st Annual Juried Exhibition of the Greenwich Art Society.

A little girl is sitting on the curb, watching a parade. Something is amiss. Her doll has a startled look and the stars on the flag behind her are fading. I painted this as a commentary on our political situation.

Choirboys

Lined up in a row like well-behaved children, a group of young boys sits very properly, hands folded across their knees. I portray them as somewhat less than innocent. The varied facial expressions are juxtaposed against the sameness of their uniforms.

Blues and purples dominate this image of a young Asian girl holding her younger sibling on her hip. The brush strokes are impressionistic, capturing movement. There are subtle images of elephants in the background.

Bright reds and grays dominate this painting of an attractive red-headed woman, smoking a cigarette. While her look is sultry, her activity is dangerous. The smoke is painted to look like skulls, emphasizing the danger of smoking.

Take This Bread

30"x40"
Painted with rapid brush strokes, primarily in shades of brown and orange, this painting evokes the warmth of family as well as culture. We met this woman in Greece and she offered us her loaf of bread. The words say, "Like my grandmother, twinkling eyes, an outstretched hand. Come, she says, take this bread."

Like my grandfather

This painting of an elderly Greek man was inspired by a photo I took on one of my trips. The words say, "Like my Grandfather, proud and independent, he sits and smiles in the garden of remembrance."

The Baker of Rhodes

I was in Rhodes during the celebration of Easter in Greece. The local bakers were very busy creating special cakes for the holiday. I painted this image from a photo I had taken of a baker in Rhodes. The bright colors suggest the warmth of the ovens and the people.
